![]() ![]() The film has an incredibly warm heart and captures the morals of the story very well but it's also quite creepy during the ghost sequences. The supporting cast is equally great with Frank Finlay as Marley's Ghost, Angela Pleasence as Ghost of Christmas Past, Edward Woodward as Ghost of Christmas Present, David Warner and Susannah York as Bob Cratchit and his wife and Michael Gough as Mr. Scott really does a great job in the role and he perfectly captures the coldness of the character and he brilliantly pulls off the final act of his breakdown and new life. ![]() Another wonderful thing are the performances, which are all brilliant from Scott to the smallest person in the film. Every single scene is full of wonderful detail and the colors, cinematography and lighting are perfect throughout. What really separates this film from other versions is the terrific look, which really feels authentic and sets up the story well. This is an incredibly beautiful, eerie and very touching version of the story, which is pitch perfect from start to finish. It was traditional for ghost stories to be read at Christmas time, and this short novella form meant that the whole tale could be read. I've seen quite a few of these films based on the famous story and I think this one here has become my favorite. Dickens published A Christmas Carol on 19th December 1843. ![]() Scott plays Scrooge in this made for TV version of the classic Dickens story. Christmas Carol, A (1984) **** (out of 4) George C. ![]() ![]() ![]() Yes, I’m leaning a bit heavily into the water metaphors here, but that’s because we’re about to discuss You Brought Me the Ocean, the powerful and greatly needed new Young Adult graphic novel by Alex Sanchez and Julie Maroh that looks at Jake Hyde-perhaps known a bit better as Aqualad in the traditional DC Universe-as he gradually comes to terms with the truth of who he is. Far too often, when teenagers realize they’re gay they find themselves trying to swim against the truth, frightened of where the tide may be taking them and worried that they may drown in a sea of unanticipated emotions. For some, the result may be refreshing, like a splash of cool water, while for others it may leave them feeling like they’re adrift on a stormy sea. It can hit us with the force of a tsunami…or we can find ourselves easing into it like a swimming pool on a hot summer day. ![]() ![]() It was interesting to see the contrast with other “languages” like “bee language”.Īnother 1920s definition by Edward Sapir goes like this: They are:Ģ) Broadcast transmission and directional receptionģ) Rapid fading (and, Rapid firing too, in my view!)Īlthough looking at them as single words might make this look like a bunch of contradicting features, the explanations on the Wiki page (atleast to me), made things clearer.
